Artist Statement/About the Artist

"Alone on the seashore. The sun begins to rise. Birds frolic at waters edge. The sun begins to embrace the earth in the soft warm light of a new day. Sight and sounds change, textures are revealed. The Sun continues to rise casting its light further and further. All the elements are in place to capture the beauty Mother Nature reveals. It is inspirational. At moments like these, I realize my purpose is to capture this beauty and sense of inspiration and share it with others. On the nightly news, we are constantly overwhelmed with negative images. I feel compelled to show that the world is still a beautiful place filled with hope and inspiration."

It is with this deep appreciation and reverence for nature that I set out to capture the glorious seascapes and unique light of Cape Cod. My favorite time for "seeing the light" is dawn and my preferred camera is the large format 4" x 5" view camera (although I also use smaller formats). Although most people truly have embraced digital cameras, I still shoot all film. I feel strongly that there is an inherent look and feel to film that a digital camera is not capable of capturing. The 4" x 5" camera type, which harkens back to the "days of old" is heavy to carry and slow to set up. It is a very careful methodical process, from loading individual sheets of film into the holders the night before to setting up the camera. I compose the image with a black dark cloth draped over my head to enable me to view the image (upside down) on the camera's ground glass, thus isolating myself from external distractions. The result is images that are contemplated and not "just snapped". Additionally the color quality, details and tones are simply fantastic. In my opinion it is far superior to any digital capture for my style of seascape/nature work.

My goal is not to document a scene, but to produce an image that captures my vision and conveys the mood of the scene to a viewer. To achieve this I use many techniques including time exposures, filters (polarizers and neutral density), color balancing, contrast control and film selection for contrast and color saturation characteristics. Except for picking up the litter as I hike the beaches of Cape Cod, nothing is ever removed from or added to an image. Enjoy my images knowing that amidst all of the difficulties and chaos in the world, there is still great beauty and inspiration to be found.
